*Low Energy Neurofeedback (LENS) acts on the central nervous system (the electrodes are connected to the scalp). The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening therapy where the mode of action is considered to be on the Autonomic Nervous System – primarily Parasympathetic Nervous System recalibration. These two neurological zones, although tightly interwoven, are distinct cognitive systems*. There is, therefore, no direct way in which these protocols can be considered to interfere with each other.
I find that doing the SSP as a home program near the beginning of a series of LENS sessions can increase the efficacy of both protocols. The indirect effect of greater calm and clarity each of these protocols enables seems to enhance the body’s ability to adapt to the adaptive challenges the other protocol exerts on our neurology. My experience with clients has been that change that they come in to see me for happens more quickly and easily.
* These cognitive systems are evolutionarily distinct neurological layers, with our Autonomic or “Gut” neurology predating the emergence of the vertebrate central nervous system by hundreds of millions of years
